One cable, everything at once
A single USB-C cable carries the Retina video, up to 100 W of charging for the Mac, and the USB hub for your keyboard, mouse and drives. Plug it in once and the whole setup wakes together.
That is the difference between a monitor and a dock plus a charger plus a display cable: here the monitor is all three, over one connector.
Lid open or closed
Keep the laptop open as a second screen, or close it and run in clamshell mode with an external keyboard and mouse. Either way the desk stays a single-cable setup, and unplugging one cable frees the Mac to leave with you.
If you switch between a work Mac and a personal one, one cable to swap is all it takes.

Does closed-lid (clamshell) work?
