27-inch 5K got cheap. 32-inch 6K didn’t.

On 27-inch 5K the price war happened, and everyone won. On 32-inch 6K it never started — and that is now the last place on the monitor market where the gap is measured in thousands of euros.

What changed at 27 inches

Two years ago, a 27-inch 5K display under €1,000 was an argument in itself. Not any more. BenQ lists the MA270S at $999, Apple still sells the Studio Display, and several established brands have entered the segment. The 27-inch 5K panel has become a standard component, produced in volume, that any manufacturer can integrate.

That is good news, and we are not going to pretend otherwise: our G27P is still €869.90, but the gap against the big brands has narrowed. At this size the decision now turns on build, connectivity and service rather than price alone.

Then there is 32-inch 6K. And there, nothing happened.

The price gap, in numbers

A 32-inch 6K panel shows 6144 × 3456 pixels — 21.2 million pixels at 223 pixels per inch. That is the resolution that lets macOS render natively in Retina, with every logical point drawn across four physical pixels. Here is what that density costs, depending on who sells it to you.

List price divided by the number of pixels on screen. The Pro Display XDR stand, billed separately, is not counted — it would widen the gap further.

At equivalent pixel density, the Apple display costs close to four times more. That is not a difference in tier, it is a difference in invoice: over €4,000 for the same working surface. And if you are eyeing a used Pro Display XDR at around €3,300, the gap is still more than €1,800 — without a new warranty.

Why 6K, and not a 32-inch 4K

32-inch 4K is everywhere today, and it is the worst of both worlds. 3840 × 2160 across 32 inches gives roughly 138 ppi: too coarse for Retina @2x rendering, which would leave a 1920 × 1080 point workspace — absurd on a panel that size. And at native scale the text is too small, which forces non-integer scaling: slightly soft rendering, extra GPU load, and a compromise you live with eight hours a day.

A 32-inch 6K gives you exactly the same density as a 27-inch 5K with 44% more usable pixels. A full timeline with its tracks and its monitor. Two code windows side by side, each at its normal width, plus a terminal. An A4 document at true size with the palettes open around it. This is not “a bigger screen” — it is a different workstation.

What the G32P does not do

The Pro Display XDR is not expensive for nothing. Its mini-LED backlight sustains 1,000 nits full-screen and peaks at 1,600 nits. If your job is HDR grading for film or broadcast, it is the right tool and the price is justified. The G32P does not replace a reference HDR monitor: it tops out at 500 nits, in SDR, with 2,000:1 contrast.

It also runs at 60 Hz. It is not a gaming display, and we will never present it as one.

For everything else — development, writing, dense office work, photo retouching, editing, CAD, interface design — you get the same pixel density and the same working surface on an anti-reflective panel, for over €4,000 less. The question is not “which is the better display”. It is: “are you paying €4,000 for an HDR capability you will never use?”

Why nobody closed the gap

Because the 32-inch 6K panel is still rare. Few manufacturers produce one, and it takes electronics able to carry 21 million pixels at 60 Hz: DisplayPort 1.4 with DSC compression, or Thunderbolt / USB4. The volume is not there, so the competition never arrived. ASUS did launch a ProArt 6K, and we compared it to ours honestly — but at market scale the offer remains tiny next to 27-inch 5K.

We decided to start that price war anyway.

Frequently asked questions

Isn’t a 32-inch 4K enough?

At 32 inches, 4K gives roughly 138 ppi. That is too coarse for comfortable Retina @2x rendering and too fine for legible native display: you are forced into non-integer scaling, with softer text. 6K removes that compromise.

Is the G32P compatible with my Mac?

Yes for Apple Silicon Macs, at 6K 60 Hz over USB-C or DisplayPort. For a PC you need a Thunderbolt 3/4/USB4 port or DisplayPort 1.4 and later, with a supported graphics card.

Why is it so much cheaper than Apple?

Because it is not trying to do the same thing. The Pro Display XDR carries a mini-LED backlight built for reference HDR grading, an expensive technology. The G32P concentrates on what most professionals actually need: pixel density, working surface and SDR accuracy.

Can I use it without the supplied stand?

Yes. Both models come in a VESA 100 × 100 version, compatible with standard monitor arms, including our Kuycon 32″ stands.

What warranty do I get?

2 years in the European Union, 1 year outside the EU, with worldwide shipping from the Kuycon Europe store.
