Dual monitors: setting them up properly, or doing without
Two monitors is not only twice the surface: it is also a bezel in the middle of your field of view, two calibrations to align and twice as many cables. Here is how to do it cleanly — and the cases where a single large monitor does better.

Three configurations that work
Two identical monitors, side by side
The most satisfying configuration, by far. Two panels of the same model share the same colorimetry, the same brightness, the same bezel height: your eye moves from one to the other without a hitch. Two G27P give 5120 points of width in workspace, at Retina density.
The trap to avoid: mixing two different models. A 5K next to a 4K of the same size forces two distinct scalings, and contrast differs from one side to the other. That is tolerable for a secondary monitoring screen; it is tiring for work that crosses both panels.
One main, one secondary in portrait
The favourite setup of developers and writers: a main monitor in landscape, a second rotated 90 degrees for code, documentation, a complete page or a discussion thread. Kuycon stands provide rotation as standard, and the second monitor can be a more modest model — it is the one case where mixing two products is defensible.
One monitor, a different machine on each
Work computer on one side, personal machine on the other. Rather than two monitors, one input per machine on the same monitor is often enough; we cover that setup in two computers on one monitor.
Checking that your machine can keep up
Two high-resolution panels demand twice the bandwidth. Three checkpoints:
- The number of external monitors supported. On a Mac, it depends directly on the chip: some entry-level generations drive only one external monitor with the lid open. Check your model's spec sheet before buying the second monitor.
- The number of real video outputs. On a laptop, not every USB-C port carries video: you need two that do, or one video port plus a DisplayPort.
- The available bandwidth. Two 5K monitors at 60 Hz demand about 34 Gbit/s in total. A cheap dock will share its bandwidth between the two outputs and throttle both.

Aligning and adjusting
Put both panels at the same height
The tops of the two monitors must line up to the millimetre. A two-centimetre offset is felt all day. A dual arm or two adjustable stands settle the question.
Open the angle slightly
Do not set the two monitors flat in the same plane: angle each one towards you, forming a very open V. Your gaze stays perpendicular to the panel you are reading.
Order them in the system
On a Mac, in System Settings › Displays, drag the thumbnails to reflect the physical layout and designate the main display. On Windows, in Settings › System › Display.
Match brightness and colours
Two identical panels leave the factory very close, but not identical. The DDC/CI protocol lets you adjust each monitor from the computer; a probe will align the two as precisely as possible if you work on images.

Do you need two identical monitors?
It is considerably preferable for work that crosses both panels: the same colorimetry, the same brightness, the same bezel height. Mixing two models is really only defensible for a secondary auxiliary monitor, for instance rotated into portrait.
Can my Mac drive two 5K monitors?
It depends on the chip: some entry-level generations support only one external monitor. Check your model's spec sheet before buying the second monitor, it is the most common nasty surprise.
Is a dock enough for two monitors?
