The single-cable desk
You set the laptop down, you plug in one cable, and everything is connected: the monitor, the keyboard, the mouse, the external drive — and the machine charges. That is not a marketing promise, it is how a USB-C monitor normally works. Provided three conditions are met.
The principle
What travels down the cable
A USB-C cable between the laptop and the monitor carries three streams at once: the video signal at native resolution, the data from the peripherals plugged into the monitor, and up to 100 W of power in the other direction. The monitor becomes the dock.
Three conditions for this to work:
- Your machine's port must support DisplayPort Alt mode. This is the point that blocks things most often. A Thunderbolt 3, 4 or 5 port always does; an ordinary USB-C port, not necessarily. Look for the DisplayPort logo or the Thunderbolt lightning bolt next to the socket.
- The cable must be a full one. Use the one supplied with the monitor. A USB-C charging cord bought separately often carries no video at all, and that is invisible from the outside.
- The power must be sufficient. 100 W covers a MacBook Air, a 14-inch MacBook Pro and almost every Windows laptop. Beyond that, the machine charges more slowly under a full workload: it will not run down in everyday use.

The typical setup
The monitor stays plugged in permanently
Mains power on one side, and that is all. It does not move again.
The peripherals plug into the monitor
Keyboard, mouse, USB stick, external drive, headset: everything goes through the monitor's built-in hub, not through the laptop. The supplied USB-C to USB-A adapters serve older peripherals.
A single cable goes to the laptop
You plug it in when you arrive, you unplug it when you leave. Nothing else to touch.
Brightness is set from the keyboard
Thanks to the DDC/CI protocol, with no button to hunt for under the panel. The tools are listed on the brightness control.
Monitor or dock?
The question deserves asking, because the two overlap. A USB-C monitor with a built-in hub replaces a dock in most cases: one less device on the desk, one less power brick, and no bandwidth shared between picture and data.
A dock keeps two advantages: it often brings an Ethernet port and more connectors, and it lets you drive two monitors from a single port. At high resolutions, however, many docks throttle the display without saying so: for a first connection in 5K or 6K, always test directly before drawing conclusions.
What does not work, and why
- A charging cable instead of a full cable. Symptom: the machine charges, no picture appears.
- The wrong USB-C port. Same symptom: always try the other ports before looking further.
- A passive adapter. An HDMI-to-USB-C adapter converts nothing: you need an active converter, and the bandwidth remains that of the weakest link.
- A USB-C extension. Beyond two metres, high-bandwidth signals degrade; prefer a certified single-piece cable.

And on a desktop?
On a Mac mini, a Mac Studio or a PC tower, charging is of no interest: the machine has its own power supply. DisplayPort then becomes the best choice for the picture, because it offers maximum bandwidth. The monitor's USB hub remains useful for peripherals, via a second USB-C cable dedicated to data.

Is 100 W enough?
For a MacBook Air, a 14-inch MacBook Pro and most Windows laptops, amply. On a machine whose original charger delivers more, charging is simply slower when the computer is working flat out.
Can you plug a keyboard and mouse into the monitor?
Yes, that is in fact the point of the setup: the built-in USB hub powers and connects the peripherals, which stay permanently plugged into the monitor. Two USB-C to USB-A adapters are supplied for older hardware.
